Hundertwasser transformed the former functional building into a colorful work of art that is now a popular photo motive in Vienna. The plant plays a key role in Vienna's efficient waste, recycling and disposal system, which contributes significantly to the environmentally friendly production of heating and hot water. Every year, around 250,000 tons of waste are thermally recycled at the highest environmental level in the waste incineration plant and the Spittelau district heating plant. Heat is also extracted from the flue gas and fed into the district heating network. After more than 40 years of operation, renovation work is currently being carried out on the thermal waste treatment plant. As part of this work, numerous AGRUCHEM industrial pipelines with a diameter of up to 630 mm are being routinely replaced.
The Vienna power plants and their unique facilities such as the Spittelau gauze incineration plant are an example of the successful combination of art and technology in the service of the environment.
